Latitude Art Residency - Cape Town

Latitude Art Residency - Cape Town

The Latitude Art Residency was founded in 2025 through the alliance between Taranmana Art and Kokos Huis Riebeek Kasteel, following the success of the solo exhibition by artist Sonia Bermúdez, held on November 8, 2024, in this historic venue of more than two centuries in Cape Town. Building on that project, both institutions worked throughout the following year to develop an international artist residency program designed to establish a sustained cultural exchange.

Conceived as a space for creation and dialogue, the residency offers the selected artist curatorial guidance and mentorship, as well as access to a unique working environment: full accommodation and meals at Kokos Huis, and use of its historic hall as both a production site and exhibition space.

This structure allows artists to fully immerse themselves in the social, cultural, and natural context of South Africa, developing works profoundly influenced by their surroundings.

For over two decades, Aminda Saludes has devoted her career to creating spaces where art can be experienced with intimacy and intensity. Founder of Taranmana Art in 2019, she has shaped a project with its own identity, challenging conventional exhibition formats and fostering an open, diverse, and critical dialogue between artwork, artist, and spectator.

In this new phase, Taranmana is transforming and expanding its scope, opening up to international programs, art fairs, and residencies that deepen engagement with contemporary art. The Cape Town residency is a natural step in this evolution: a context that connects artists with new geographies and, under Aminda’s curatorial guidance, becomes an experience of research, mentorship, and visibility. Guided by instinct and emotion beyond market pressures, Aminda understands art as a tool for communication and a register of our collective history.

With Andorran and English roots, Prisca is the soul of Kokos Huis. Her background in the field and her sensitivity to creating authentic spaces have led her to transform this historic building of over two centuries into a place where time seems suspended. After founding l’Ovella Negra, a mountain retreat in the Pyrenees that became a cult destination, she envisioned Kokos Huis as a bridge between island nostalgia, natural beauty, and contemporary art.

Within the residency, Prisca brings her experience in space management and her artistic sensibility, creating an atmosphere that enables artists to immerse themselves in the environment and develop their projects with freedom and inspiration.

Throughout her life, Prisca has grown up surrounded by art and has developed her own perspective on creation and visual culture, making her contribution to the residency both unique and enriching for the participating artists.

Through the collaboration between Aminda Saludes with Taranmana Art and Prisca with Kokos Huis, this residency takes shape as a unique project that combines curatorial expertise and professional support with a rich cultural environment. The Latitude Art Residency thus emerges as a platform of connection and visibility, designed to build bridges between the Cape Town art scene and creators from other geographies, fostering a dialogue that expands boundaries and opens new possibilities for contemporary practice.

International Open Call

Open call for artistic creation and exhibition.

Duration: 1 to 3 months
Deadline: October 15, 2025

The Latitude Art Residency South Africa – Cape Town offers a unique creative environment for international artists with established careers. Participants will develop solid projects influenced by the natural, cultural, and urban environment of Cape Town, enhancing immersive experiences and the creation of innovative works.

The residency is characterized by the site-specific production and exhibition for this location, the 200-year-old Kokos Huis hall. This means that the artwork will be developed with the space and environment in mind, allowing both to influence the artistic project. For this reason, the application requests information about the artist and their project: the proposal will be evaluated to determine if it fits this approach of creating a work specifically for this location.

What the residency offers:

Full accommodation and meals at Kokos Huis Riebeek Kasteel, adapted for both daily life and artistic creation.

A private hall of over 200 years, with optimal conditions for production and future exhibition.

Support for research and project development within the local context, including professional advice and connections with cultural institutions and galleries in Cape Town.

Curatorial and cultural guidance, along with logistical support throughout the residency.
