Painting a landscape from nature is always about, almost falling into convention, this is the challenge". José Maria Guerrero Medina

In contrast to the expressionist subjectivity that shapes his work, such as the powerful and well-defined paintings of the human figure and the attractive biomorphic sculptures, these panoramas of nature appear painted with a light hand and delicate brushstrokes. For some time, he has allowed himself to be seduced by nature and in particular by the land where he has lived for decades, the Empordà.

Excerpts from the text for the catalogue of the exhibition "LA MIRADA – Images of memory" at the Sala Parés, Manuel Vázquez Montalban.

Guerrero Medina looked at a field of wildflowers and suddenly the painting was filled with rhythmic spots that obeyed the original arrangement but became an alternative plastic reorganization. He did the same with the secret streams of water without purpose, almost without a valley to take to the soul and suddenly he discovered and revealed to us a macrocosm hidden in the depths of the detail.

His compositional skills are impressive, the technique the result of a great wealth of experience. He captures the landscape with pictorial approximations of masses, stains and transparencies that bring colour, shadows and movement to the landscape.

Although landscapes are not the most important subject in Guerrero Medina's extensive career, they do represent a large part of his subject matter, though they are not his essential concern, much less his only one.

The challenge of never falling into the "conventional" to avoid the predominance of style and technique.

Guerrero is a cult painter for unconditional followers, but almost a secret painter for a large part of society.
