Jan Ung (Oslo, 1956) a documentary photographer is the son of Norwegian sculptor and graphic artist Per Ung (Oslo,1933 – 2023) and an English mother.
The Norwegian photographer studied at Royal College of Art in London, from 1978 – 80 though he started taking pictures long before his university studies.
At that time, he dreamt of becoming a press photographer.
Over the years he has travelled to Greece, France, Italy in the early 80´s, then Germany and Spain.
Ung bases his practice on planned projects or thought-out compositions, but his modus operandi and main source of subject are images of people and places he comes across while walking around.
The ability to capture moments when he chances on a scene or is stopped in his tracks by a person, a moment in time reflects his talent and capacity of knowing the potential of the end result.
The black and white photography that englobes portraits, street portraits, beauty, nudes and submission, brings out the potency of the image in its raw, bare and dramatic composition.
